Energy (Storage) Regulation: Impact on Energy Businesses

Energy (Storage) Regulation: Impact on Energy Businesses

Plan ahead. Spot the regulatory obstacles. Navigate the future of energy storage with certainty.

We will announce the next run of this course in due course. If you are interested and would like to know when this course is open for enrolment, register your interest below.

Digital transformation in the energy sector is accelerating. As companies design new business models to optimise emerging opportunities, there is a growing need to grapple with new regulation. But as we make the move from products to services, from brick and mortar to platforms, and with decentralisation changing the playing field, how do you stay up to speed with change?

Energy (Storage) Regulation is delivered by, InnoEnergy, one of Europe’s leading authorities in energy and business innovation. During the workshop, you build a big-picture understanding of the latest opportunities in energy technology. How regulations impact these opportunities. And how to navigate them towards future success. You emerge from the course, empowered to:

  • Distinguish between different business models of battery storage at grid-scale, behind-the-meter, off-grid and in mobility
  • Develop an overview of the main battery storage technology groups, their respective most promising technologies and their technical characteristics
  • See the big picture in battery storage services and technologies, understanding why they have been developed and deployed at a much slower pace than expected
  • Gain actionable insight into the regulatory situation in Europe and an understanding of how to navigate in uncertainty.

What will you learn?

You will examine the impact of existing and changing regulation of energy and energy storage.

To get the most from this workshop, we recommend that you take our free online course, Battery Storage Technology: Opportunities and Uses, in preparation for the workshop (although this is not compulsory). In the online course you will discover promising battery storage technologies; exploring their workings, strengths, weaknesses, and possible place in Europe’s future. You’ll look into a range of uses; not only in the energy sector - but in transportation, industry, the home and more.

In our face-to-face workshop you explore the many regulatory issues that still need to be clarified, such as:

  • Connection rules
  • Participation in balancing, flexibility and other grid services
  • Transmission and distribution charges and levies
  • Ownership
  • Synergies with renewable energy.

How will you learn?

This dynamic and hands-on workshop is offered in Barcelona, Spain. You can enhance your learning experience by taking the additional, non-mandatory, free online course module.

The preparatory online course, Battery Storage Technology: Opportunities and Uses, is expertly designed to maximise impact and flexibility. As long as you have access to the internet, you can pursue your learning anytime, anywhere at the pace and rhythm that works for you. Assessment is based on multiple-choice tests after every other lecture and a final test assessment. Content include:

Week 1: Battery storage: potential and limitations
Week 2: Battery storage applications: grid scale and electric vehicles
Week 3: Battery storage applications: behind the meter and off-grid.

During the highly interactive workshop:

  • Experienced faculty will share insights
  • Peers discuss regulations and their impact
  • Consider clear examples in EU regulations for energy businesses.

You can also attend a one-day workshop the day before on Business Model Innovation in Energy (Storage) where you will learn to think outside the box about the kinds of business models that will keep you ahead in a turbulent market. If this is of interest, you can find out more about the two-day workshop here.
