More and more battery applications are entering the market, leading to stronger requirements in terms of power converter performance and efficiency in order to be competitive. Power converters are essential components in electrical systems with batteries. They serve as an interface between systems of different voltage levels, convert between AC and DC, and enable charging and discharging of batteries.

This course covers from the basic principles of power conversion to learning how to match the right type of converter to various real-world battery applications, while assessing overall system performance with respect to energy efficiency. Furthermore, this course discusses the need of power converters for battery applications. It dives into the different types of power converters and explains the underlying principles. The use of power converters is illustrated via a number of applications. The fundamental concept of efficiency is also discussed.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply insights in the need for power conversion in future applications
  • Identify the type of power converters required in a battery application
  • Evaluate a given application in terms of component and system efficiency
  • Take into account the energy losses of power converters and batteries in the assessment of overall system performance

What will you learn?

This course has been designed to give you unparalleled, deep insights on each step of the cell design process. More specifically, you will learn about:

  • The need for power conversion
  • Principles and types of switched power converters
  • Converter Losses and Efficiency
  • Power Electronic Interfaces for Batteries
  • Total System Energy Efficiency in Battery Applications

How will you learn?

This course is offered completely online and can be taken anywhere as long as you have connection to the internet. The course consists of 11 video lessons which is entirely self-paced. Each lesson includes relevant reading materials and exercises. Business examples will be used to illustrate the learning content and there are online quizzes to test your progress. The course lasts 4 weeks and you will require approximately 1,5 hours per week to work your way through the course material.

Who will teach you?

Jolien Despeghel
PhD Researcher, EnergyVille | KU Leuven

Jolien Despeghel is PhD student in Electrical Engineering at KU Leuven/Energyville. She is researcher on the project Energy Storage as a Disruptive Technology in the Energy System of the Future.

Is it right for you?

This course is designed for those whose professional profiles are or resamble:
